Fox Grosses $1 Billion in Foreign Box Office

According to Variety, 20th Century Fox has surpassed the $1 billion mark in foreign box office revenue. Thanks to huge hits like Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the studio is dominating the global marketplace. It looks like a slate of sequels with colons in the title is what it takes to sell movie tickets.

The other Fox films that contributed to their international success in 2009 were released in late 2008: Valkyrie, Marley and Me and Australia. With his starring roles in Wolverine and Australia, People‘s Sexiest Man Alive Hugh Jackman can take credit for helping the studio clear the $1 billion hurdle. The Oscar host sure is having a great year.

The Jonas Brothers upcoming album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times

The Jonas Brothers’ new album Lines, Vines and Trying Times will be released on June 16th. In the meantime, fans can check out an exclusive pre-recorded concert — featuring songs from the album and behind-the-scenes interviews — on Walmart.com

To paraphrase Paul Simon, “Every generation throws a boy band up the pop chart.” The ’60s had The Beatles and The Monkees, the ’70s gave us The Jackson 5 and The Osmonds, the ’80s begat New Kids on the Block and New Edition, the ’90s were dominated by The Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync, while the late ’00s are all about the wholesome New Jersey trio of Joe, Kevin and Nick Jonas.

Admittedly, I’m a little long in the tooth to be embracing pop music intended for an audience of teenage girls, but I have to applaud the Jonas Brothers for their musicianship, broad appeal and multi-media dominance. They provide the voices of the cherubs in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, they have their eponymous show on The Disney Channel, and they were up for Best New Artist at the 2009 Grammy Awards. It’s a Jonas Brothers world; we’re just living in it.

Movies in Imax

When Warner Bros. moved the release date of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from last fall to July 15, 2009, they were only able to secure two Imax locations: New York and L.A. Most Imax screens will still be showing Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (which opens on June 24), so the rest of the country will have to wait until July 29 to see Harry and his pals on the giant screen.

I love seeing movies on the big screen as much as the next guy, but it’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed the Imax experience. Those locations seem to sell out before I get my act together, so I tend to catch new releases on standard-sized movie screens. (There is one exception: the art house theater near my apartment whose screens seem smaller than the one on that Sony Watchman I had back in 1985. Hey, when you want to see Every Little Step, the documentary about the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line, you gotta do what you gotta do. But why don’t they ever release those kinds of films in the Imax format?)
