The Queen & The Saints Score, Pick Sunday’s Best Ads!

Happy Monday! Are you fully recovered from your Super Bowl watching/supporting/partying/avoiding? Regardless of your rooting preferences, I’d have to say it’s still a nice victory for New Orleans – which has really been home of the raw deal these past few years. Speaking of cool things that benefit places facing genuine hardship, did you catch Queen Latifah, Diddy and Pharrell on Friday night, live from Miami? The SOS Haiti telethon was a huge success with everyone from Spike Lee, Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige and Ludacris to Justin Bieber & Mike Tyson answering phones. And how about Bill Clinton and Busta Rhymes taking the stage? The whole thing was a slam-dunk, providing much-needed funds to help those affected by Haiti’s quake. In other weekend news – how about the fact that after 7 weekends at the top of the box office heap Avatar has finally been unseated? That’s right. Evidently while all the gentlemen spent their weekends focusing on The Game, all the single ladies took it upon themselves to hit cineplexes nationwide and to bring all of their ticket-buying friends, so that Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried had a #1 box office hit with their romantic drama Dear John. To the tune of $32.4 million which is music to the ears of anyone hoping to usurp James Cameron’s epic. (Avatar still took in $23 million this weekend, and remains the biggest box office champ ever, ever, but it’s nice to see another film give those Blue Cats a run for their (whoppingly amassed) money. The weekend of course culminated with the Super Bowl. Which was certainly a fun show featuring some some pretty wild commercials. Now, in terms of Super Bowl’s own box office numbers, let’s just say they estimated $90 million dollars was bet legally on the Colts/Saints showdown. And that’s the legit part. How about Carrie Underwood’s Super Bowl Star Spangled Banner (with her matching Star Spangled Outfit?) By the way, did you know that Carrie’s also scored her very first movie role? This one’s called “Soul Surfer”, and it’s the true story of an intrepid young surfer who lost her arm to a shark bite and recovered, to surf again. And in addition to Carrie, the stars were out in full force in Miami this weekend – with everyone from Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to J.Lo, Kate Walsh, Blake Lively, Chace Crawford, Taylor Lautner and Kellen Lutz — just to name a few. So back to The Game – or at least my favorite part of The Game: the ads. Did you watch them? Did you enjoy them? Queen Latifah to Host All-Star Haiti Telethon

Happy Super Bowl Weekend. (Now, be honest: are you actually planning to watch the game, or are you just in it for the commercials - or both?) Queen Latifah’s also got a pretty special gig going on tonight in Miami, but before we tell you all about that, we have an obit: one of TV’s Grande Dames has left us. Frances Reid, star of “Days of Our Lives” for over 40 years, has passed away at age 95. Reid also had roles on Broadway, in “As The World Turns” and “The Edge of Night”. A fond farewell to a daytime icon. And now, for something that’s going to bring more much-needed relief to lots of people who desperately need our help (turns out, Super Bowl XLIV isn’t the only event in Miami where the stars will be out in full force). Tonight, People’s Choice’s own Queen Latifah will be hosting a very special benefit concert to help earthquake-ravaged Haiti. The “SOS Saving Ourselves – Help For Haiti” telethon will air live from the American Airlines Arena in Miami, at 8PM ET, on BET, MTV, VH1 and other cable channels. Sean “Diddy” Combs and Pharrell Williams will share hosting duties with the Queen in what promises to be a spectacular evening of words & music. As I write this, performers are still being added to tonight’s roster (as well as a few surprise guests), but the acts already on board are mighty impressive, to say the least. As in: Mary J. Blige, Ludacris, Ne-Yo, Robin Thicke, Justin Bieber, and Wyclef Jean, as well as Nas and Jamaican reggae artist Damian Marley. Children’s Safe Drinking Water, the Yéle Haiti foundation, CARE, and Project Medishare will be some of the night’s beneficiaries . Want to help out and be a part of it? Tune in tonight and give them a call OR, if you happen to be in the Miami area, “SOS Saving Ourselves – Help For Haiti” tickets are available through Ticketmaster, although at press time they were going fast. It’s going to be a unique and very powerful show indeed, and a great example of what happens when genuine talent decides to take a stand for those who need it most. No Leno? Best Dressed: Your Fave PCA Red Carpet Looks

Happy Monday. Hope you all enjoyed your weekends. And just maybe, between a) providing wonderful feedback for us on last week’s Awards Show (guess it’s official: you really, really, really like Mr. Depp, Mr. Laurie, Ms. Bullock and Ms. Swift) b) letting us know who should (and shoudn’t) have worn WHAT on the Red Carpet and c) making sure Avatar was the #1 movie in America for the 4th straight week in a row, you got to relax. Speaking of Avatar, those darn blue cats seem to have far more than nine lives because that film may go on to become the biggest grossing movie ever. Now, we cannot say the same for Jay Leno’s “experimental” new primetime show which has now — according to NBC — been canceled. Are we bummed? Possibly. Surprised? Not at all. All we know is that Jay is less than pleased, no clue about what’s going to happen to Conan (who continues to be very likeable), and poor Jimmy Fallon may get pushed into some kind of weird Twilight Zone time slot. In wedding news, Canadian crooner Michael Buble is engaged (if his name’s not ringing a bell, just imagine if one of Sinatra’s Rat Pack were cast on The Vampire Diaries or Gossip Girl and that oughtta give you a visual) Congrats, MB. And we also have reports that Josh Duhamel and Fergie just “renewed” their wedding vows after one year (and a little infidelity buzz). All I’m wondering is: a) Did they not get the words right the first time and b) Does this have anything to do with Josh’s new movie coming out? Hm.Anyway, let’s get back to the Awards. We all know that half the fun is what they’re wearing so, why don’t you all weigh in on some of the ladies’ frocks (later on in the week we’ll be discussing some of the gents’ fashions). The People’s Choice Awards are here! Tune in tonight — 9/8C on CBS — to see Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Taylor Lautner, Ryan Reynolds, Carrie Underwood, Cobra Starship, Kellan Lutz,…and that’s just the beginning. The evening will — I promise — deliver some astonishing, blow-your-doors-off appearances by some PHENOMENAL surprise guests stars. Just wait and see…it’s going to be a great show. Plus, I’ll be there keeping you up to date with a live blog on all the goings-on and you can give us feedback all night. So stay tuned. Now, even though it’s hard for me to imagine too much else going on in the world of entertainment today, I should point out a few fun facts. First up, in place of a recent box office hit Matthew McConaughey and partner Camila Alves have delivered something else equally joyous: a brand new baby girl, named Vida. She joins big brother Levi (17 months old) in comprising what may be one of the more visually appealing families on earth. In other coupl-ey news, Katy Perry may have kissed a girl but she’s decided to make it official with dashing/controversial/funny/filthy/rogue/English comedian/actor Russell Brand.US Magazine reports the pair — who began dating in September — got engaged in India. So there’s that. So on to today’s poll. Now, over the past few months I’ve asked you about lots of stars and their movies — you voted on your favorites but in more than a few instances you emphatically pointed out the movies you thought we’d left out. Best Of: Pick Your Favorite “Other” Awards Show…

Tomorrow’s the DAY! This year’s People’s Choice Awards will be bigger and better than ever, so check us out live tomorrow on CBS. Plus, the lineup already looks pretty awesome. Just for starters, we have of course Queen Latifah running the show (and yes, yes, you were right…I should have included Bringing Down the House in her movie poll — next time, I promise!) So we have the Queen herself, and then how about a few Twilight/New Moon hunks? Along the lines of, say, Taylor Lautner and Kellan Lutz. They’re in. Not bad. Or perhaps you’re wondering what Ryan Reynolds, Carrie Underwood and Mary J. Blige are up to tomorrow? Turns out, they’ll be at the Nokia Theater too. Cobra Starship as well. And one more thing…these are the folks we KNOW will be there…I have it on pretty good authority that we can expect a few unbelievable surprise guests as well — and all I can say is you won’t be disappointed. I’ll be blogging live from the show, so you guys will get a complete play-by-play. I’ve decided I need to catch a glimpse of Carrie Underwood’s new diamond. Up close. Speaking of diamonds, Vince Vaughn got married this past weekend to real estate agent Kyla Weber in Chicago (sorry, ladies). Guess there’ll be no more swinging for that heartbreaking wedding crasher. Congrats, Vince. But let’s talk about tomorrow. As in, who else brings you the stars you actually want to see, and then gives them the awards you want them to get? Who else lets you guys pick the top dogs? I can’t think of another awards show that does just that. Although, to be fair, there are certainly some other fun ones out there. For years, there are the trusty other awards shows we’ve all watched, loved, hated, laughed at, cried along with, been shocked by, wanted to turn off, wished better & more deserving folks had been honored at, etc, and yet we still tune in because in the end, who doesn’t love entertainment? R.I.P. Brittany Murphy, & New DVD’s

It’s Tuesday — ready for more DVD’s? (Think stocking stuffers, because that’s exactly what the studios & the big retailers are thinking). How about (500)Days of Summer …(super cute indie romantic comedy with genuine bite courtesy of its stars Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon Levitt). Perhaps you’ll put District 9 under the tree (the trippy-earthlings-and-mutating-aliens-movie-from South Africa )…or maybe someone you know would like a wrapped up copy of Extract, (the latest from Office Space/Beavis & Butthead creator Mike Judge with a very funny Jason Bateman). Then we have All About Steve with Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper which curiously, may or may not have been a misfire for both its stars. If you happened to have seen it, let us know what you thought. In Hollywood Nuptial News, it’s official: Carrie Underwood is engaged. The lucky guy? Mike Fisher — a hockey player for the Ottawa Senators. (At first I wondered, but where will they live? And then I remembered that when you’re a multimillion record selling pop star and you’re marrying a professional athlete, well, um, that’s not the kind of stuff people like that worry about). On a more serious note, Hollywood is still stricken by the devastating news of young actress Brittany Murphy’s death by cardiac arrest this past Sunday morning. Apparently Murphy was suffering from flu-like symptoms prior to her passing, and there is an ongoing medical investigation, during which time her grieving family has asked that their privacy be respected. It seems fitting now to take a look at this young lady’s significant body of work (on both the big and little screens). David Cook, Southland, DWTS: Who’s Out?

Two words today: David Cook. With the arrival of Carrie Underwood’s CD Play On and yesterday’s poll about former Idols you’re most psyched about, it seems lots of you are overwhelmingly keen on David Cook, who wasn’t one of the four choices. Next time, I promise! Plus we have Hollywood baby news: first, actor Mel Gibson and his current GF Oksana Grigorieva, are the new parents of a daughter named Lucia (and baby makes 8 for papa Mel). Also, actress Mary Stuart Masterson had a baby boy with hub Jeremy Davidson. (If MSM’s name’s not ringing a bell, think Fried Green Tomatoes and one of my personal favorites, Some Kind Of Wonderful). Congratulations. And some REALLY good news for all of you Southland fans — and there are plenty. TNT has rescued the drama which NBC cancelled a few weeks back. So rest assured, Ben McKenzie is still on the beat. Speaking of beats — it’s Tuesday and we know what that means. Time to check in on Dancing With The Stars to see who’s going home tonight in another double elimination round. Who’s left? Why is everyone getting sick? (And who thinks the “stars” should have been designing any of the dancers’ costumes??) So — remaining we have: Donny, Michael Irvin, Mark Dacascos, Mya, Aaron Carter, Kelly Osbourne, and Joanna Krupa. The musical guest tonight will be none other than Rod Stewart. But wait! That’s not all we get, because there will also be a special appearance by the “Ballas Hough Band” (comprised of — you guessed it — Mark Ballas and Derek Hough). They’ll be performing their new single “Move”. We’ll see about that. Carrie Underwood (plus Favorite Former Idols)

Happy Monday! Happy Post-Halloween (and post-trick-or-treating-did-you-stop-the-kids-from-ingesting- every-bit-of-chocolatey-goodness within a ten-mile radius of your home?) Or, did you enjoy the requisite costume party for adults where you spend tons of time wondering if your costume’s innovative and “fun” enough only to realize — a day later – that it really didn’t matter so much because everyone had a great time anyway? Just so long as everyone remembered to set the clocks back. But let’s get to the entertainment stuff. As in, Michael Jackson’s movie This Is It brought in over $101 million dollars worldwide this weekend…that’s quite a showing for the King of Pop…did you catch it? And now begins our cinematic trek towards the holiday blockbusters…your New Moon, Invictus (from Clint Eastwood, starring Morgan Freeman & Matt Damon) Sherlock Holmes, Avatar, 2012 and other films that’ll be probable moneymakers. Speaking of moneymakers, Carrie Underwood’s latest album Play On gets released tomorrow, and there are LOTS of excited fans. This American Idol’s momentum has never really slowed, and Play On’s likely to keep her going for a while. Which got me wondering…and here comes today’s poll…which other former Idols are you most excited about? AMA Noms: Part 2: Which Lady Do You Prefer?

Wow …it’s good to see you guys have your minds made up regards a favorite male performer for the American Music Awards (coming November 22).

Now regardless of whether you selected Michael Jackson, T.I. or Eminem, in related news, the late Michael Jackson continues to do huge business across the boards — and around the world. In fact, according to recent reports MJ’s concert movie “This Is It” has already booked more than 1,600 sold-out U.S. show times… plus several ticket outlets say he is their top movie seller of the week (we’re going to talk about goodies like Where the Wild Things Are tomorrow). The King Of Pop is continuing his reign.

Now, back to the AMAs. And, as promised it’s time to consider the ladies …as in which gals nominated for best female performer you think should take home the trophy. Remember, we’re just wondering here about the pop and rock category, so if you wanted to weigh in on Reba McIntire or Carrie Underwood, just sit tight and we’ll get to them in a few.
