Bella Thorne may have risen to fame as CeCe Jones on The Disney Channel‘s Shake It Up!, but it turns out,the actress never even wanted to audition for the show.

In a recent interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz for the podcast Happy Sad Confused, the young star revealed that the only reason she tried out for a role on Disney Channel was because her family was struggling to make ends meet at the time.

“Do you think that I wanted to be a Disney girl? Did you think I wanted to do that? We were about to live physically on the street if I didn’t have that role,” Thorne said as reported by MTV.

The actress said she even made her disinterest clear during her audition for Shake It Up!, which debuted in 2010 and lasted three seasons.

“I didn’t want to audition for Shake It Up!” Thorne said on the podcast. “I literally said in my audition, ‘I don’t sing. I don’t dance. I’m basically tone deaf, and I’m not funny. So I don’t know why I’m here.’ And everybody just started laughing. They all thought it was a joke.”

Although we think that Thorne was fabulous on the Disney Channel show — despite not actually wanting to be on it — her motives behind taking the role are super sweet and heartfelt.

In addition to helping her family, she did make a name for herself — for better or worse — and now we couldn’t imagine not seeing the red-haired beauty on TV every week.

After Shake It Up!, Thorne starred on MTV’s Scream. She’s now the lead on Famous in Love, which airs on Tuesdays on Freeform, and is also available to binge-watch in full online.
