Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger and The Vampire Diaries are both high school set dramas that center around pretty people with super abilities — but that’s not all they have in common.
On Wednesday (April 19), Freeform unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming series starring Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph as teens with unique powers, and we couldn’t help but notice the similarities with the recently wrapped TVD — particularly where a specific backstory is concerned.
In Cloak and Dagger, Holt’s character, Tandy Bowen, has the ability to emit light daggers, while Joseph’s character, Tyrone Johnson, can engulf others in darkness. The trailer shows the two characters meeting for what appears to be the first time at a high school bonfire, but we later learn that they had actually met years before. In fact, Tyrone apparently saved Tandy as a child after the car she was riding in swerved off the road and into the water. In the trailer, we see a young Tyrone diving in and rescuing a fully submerged Tandy. Sound familiar?
In The Vampire Diaries, two of its central characters, Stefan (Paul Wesley), a vampire, and Elena (Nina Dobrev), a recent orphan, meet for — what fans are led to believe — is the first time at a graveyard (though they’re also high school students). By the end of the season, however, Stefan reveals to Elena that he had actually met her months before when he saved her drowning after the car she was in with her parents crashed off a bridge and into the river.
In The Vampire Diaries, the unveiling of Stefan and Elena’s first real encounter served to strengthen the bond between the characters, and if the first trailer for Cloak and Dagger is anything to go by, it looks like we can expect the same for Tandy and Tyrone.
Between super abilities, the high school setting, and the “first meeting” reveal, we’re starting to think Cloak and Dagger could be the show to fill the TVD-sized hole in our hearts. Hit the comments and let us know if you feel the same!
