When it comes to The Fate of the Furious, it’s all about
At the New York City premiere of the eighth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise this weekend, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and more stars talked about why fans were essential to the latest movie coming together.
“We make these movies for the fans,” Diesel, who plays Dom Toretto, said during the Fate of the Furious red carpet live stream presented by IGN. “Obviously when you get to Fast 8 there’s no other reason to continue if it wasn’t something that you felt the fans appreciated and expected.”
Speaking to live stream hosts Terri Schwartz and Tiffany Smith, Diesel opened up about his character going rogue in the movie, which hits theaters this weekend.
“No fan wanted to see Dom turning his back on his family,” said Diesel, who explained the development was necessary to keep the saga fresh. “When you come out of Furious 7, you know that you’re going to dare to continue. Of course the fans want you to continue, but if you really want to are to continue you have to have something groundbreaking. Nothing was more groundbreaking than the thought of Dom Toretto going rogue.”
Added Diesel: “The great thing about the movie is that it challenges not only the faith of the family on screen but the faith of the audience off screen.”
Dwayne Johnson, who joined the franchise in 2011 as Agent Hobbs, also opened up about why fans are so essential to the success of the Fast & Furious films.
“They’re extremely passionate, they’re very, very loyal and they hold the franchise to a very high bar which is big excitement, big action, great story,” Johnson said. “In my opinion, the most important thing about the movies that we make especially with the Fast & Furious franchise is that it’s gotta be fun. So as long as it’s fun and we deliver and everybody has a good time…. That’s all that matters.”
Meanwhile, Ludacris thanked fans for their support throughout the years.
“We never in a million years would have thought that myself and Tyrese, who started out in 2 Fast 2 Furious would be here at [Fast 8]. It’s the gift that keeps on giving and I just love it.”
