Last Wednesday (February 8) marked the final day of filming on The Vampire Diaries, and it was incredibly emotional.

Many members of the cast posted sweet goodbyes online and shared their love for the show and the fans through social media.

Ian Somerhalder, who has played Damon Salvatore for eight seasons, took it a step further by sharing a video on Facebook Live from his final day on set. He shot it seconds before filming the last scene of TVD ever, and we’re kind of tearing up over here.

While standing on set in Atlanta, Georgia, the 38-year-old actor got real about what he was about to do.

“I was going to rehearse, now I’m going to shoot the last scene of The Vampire Diaries ever,” he said looking into the camera. “I will be coming back on every 15 or 20 minutes if I can, but stay tuned for my next Facebook live chat. We are live from the set of The Vampire Diaries and it’s the last shot ever.”

He then introduced some of the crew members to his loyal Facebook followers before saying his final farewell to the show.

“Here we go. Last scene ever. Stay tuned, I’ll be right back on the second we cut this,” he said “What a ride man.”

What a ride indeed! While we’re sad Somerhalder didn’t have time to post another Facebook Live video as promised, he did share a wrap picture of himself on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, so we forgive him.

“That’s an official wrap on the Vampire Diaries. From the 1st day to the last night… I was the last to leave our stages early this morning, not a single crew member, not a sound,” he wrote.

The Louisiana-native then thanked the fans who have been with The CW series for eight seasons.

“To the fans, thank you for it all we would have never been on this journey without you,” he continued. “To all who made this show possible- we did it. 8 years, wow. Thank you all. Love, Ian.”

Congrats to the cast on wrapping! We can’t wait to see what’s to come on the rest of the final season.

The Vampire Diaries continues with Season 8 every Friday on The CW at 8 p.m.
