Elena (Nina Dobrev) is back — and she’s got questions.
Yesterday, The CW released the first trailer for the series finale of The Vampire Diaries, and it gives fans their first preview of Elena’s return after an almost two-season slumber. Needless to say, Elena has some questions — and they could be the clue to unlocking how the character’s journey will wrap up.
“What happened? Why am I here right now?” asks Elena in the clip.
The 10-second teaser is interspersed with various visual callbacks to season 1, including a photo of Elena from her cheerleading days, and a shot of the Mystic Falls High trophy case.
So what does it all mean?
Given her questions, it seems obvious that Elena wakes up with no memory of the spell that put her under. But has she also forgotten everything that transpired since she met the Salvatore brothers? It sure seems like it.
Elena — and her humanity — have always been the core of the series, so it seems probable that The Vampire Diaries would end by making sure both are intact. However, after this teaser, we’re wondering if the show is going to take things one step further by resetting Elena back to her season 1 self, in turn allowing her to live out the kind of life she had probably hoped to have when viewers first met her. Of course, pulling off a feat like this would require some major plot cartwheels — and that, too, in under an hour, it’s creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson). This finale theory doesn’t come without some drawbacks, though. After all, if Elena is transformed back to who she was all the way back in season 1, she’ll lose all the growth she’s experienced since. Also, it’s not like she can re-enroll in Mystic Falls High.
Still, there’s something to be said about ending the show with Elena having an entirely new, vampire-free future ahead of her. Whether or not it’s the way you’d like the show to wrap up, however, is open for debate. Hit the comments and let us know what you think of this theory, and how you’d like to see Elena’s storyline come to a close.
Correction: The original version of this post incorrectly noted that Elena isn’t yet human. The mistake has been corrected above.
