The Doctor is officially checking out. Peter Capaldi is departing Doctor Who and it’s a total shock to fans.

On Monday, the BBC series announced that Capaldi, who has been playing The Doctor on the show since 2013, will no longer be a part of the cast after season 10.

“BREAKING NEWS! It (the new series of Doctor Who) will be my last… I feel it’s time to move on,” the actor wrote in a message posted to the show’s official Twitter account.

In an interview with BBC radio on Monday (via Yahoo!), Capaldi said one of the greatest privileges of playing Doctor Who is “to see the world at its best.”

“From our brilliant crew and creative team working for the best broadcaster on the planet, to the viewers and fans whose endless creativity, generosity and inclusiveness points to a brighter future ahead,” he said. “I can’t thank everyone enough. It’s been cosmic.”

While we understand the 58-year-old actor’s need to move onto other projects, he will be greatly missed.

In fact, many fans have taken to Twitter to share their heartbreak over the news. Take a look at some reactions below:
