With two new singles firing up the charts, Ed Sheeran is definitely back. Now he’s opening up about writing music and that Justin Bieber song we all love.

On Monday, Sheeran spoke with 97.1 AMP Radio about writing “Love Yourself,” a song which was ultimately performed by Justin Bieber.

We all know that the Bieber has had major success with “Love Yourself” off his Purpose album, but it almost never happened because Sheeran — who had penned the track for himself — almost threw the song away completely.

“That was a song I had written for Divide. It just wouldn’t have made it,” Sheeran confessed about the song’s origin. “Justin took it and did his thing on it, and released it as a single and made it was it is. I wouldn’t say it was just all me.”

Added Sheeran: “It just shows you that you shouldn’t always write stuff off.”

He’s totally right since “Love Yourself” went on to earn itself a spot as Billboard’s No.1 song of 2016. Plus, it was nominated for Song of the Year at the upcoming 2017 Grammy Awards.

Not too shabby for a song that almost never existed!
