The Vampire Diaries may be coming to a close, but the jury’s still out as to whether Nina Dobrev will return for the highly anticipated series finale.

CW president Mark Pedowitz was in attendance at the Television Critics Association press tour recently, where he touched on whether or not Dobrev would return.

“The best way I can answer that question is Julie [Plec], Kevin [Williamson], the studio and The CW promise a fantastic series finale,” teased Pedowitz, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Elena Gilbert’s fate was effectively left up in the air when Dobrev departed the series in 2015. The last we saw of Elena, she’d be put under a sleeping curse that tied her life to her friend Bonnie’s (Kat Graham). Unfortunately, while Bonnie is alive, Elena is doomed to remain dormant and while that doesn’t offer too much wiggle room, it does offer a glimmer of hope for fans crossing their fingers that we’ll see Dobrev return as a fully cognizant Elena before the series wraps up for good.

Adding fuel to the fire are of course showrunner Julie Plec’s own comments. In addition to reminding us all over the years that she’s had a finale, which includes Dobrev, planned out for quite some time, Plec has also gone on the record as saying Dobrev would be open to returning for the finale when the time comes.

As we near closer and closer to the big day, we’re definitely hoping that Dobrev and Plec are able to work something out— we think we speak for all Vampire Diaries fans when we say it’d be nice to see Elena tie up any loose ends she might need to before the series comes to a close.

The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
