With The Vampire Diaries set to come to an end in just a few months, the question on everyone’s mind seems to be whether or not Nina Dobrev will return to reprise her role as Elena Gilbert.

While CW president Mark Pedowitz recently revealed that there’s no word yet on Dobrev’s potential involvement during this year’s 2017 winter TCA Press tour, a tweet on Julie Plec’s Twitter account may in fact hold the answer.

The showrunner engaged fans in an impromptu Q&A on Wednesday (Jan. 11) and while she made it a point to say that they still weren’t sure if Dobrev would be back, it was one tweet in particular that really caught our eye.

In it, Plec revealed that the current plan is to have the series end full circle with one last voice over journal entry.

“That’s the plan, but it’s not written yet,” tweeted Plec.

This particular tweet is incredibly exciting because as TVD fans know all too well, one of the very last scenes of the first episode features a voiceover by Elena as she writes in her diary.

Plec reminded us all that despite hoping that Nina Dobrev will return for the series finale, nothing’s set in stone yet.

“I cannot say,” tweeted Plec when a fan asked whether or not Dobrev, who left the series in 2015, will be making an appearance.

While it might be wishful thinking to hope Plec might want to recreate such a scene for the finale, we think it’d definitely be the ultimate full circle moment to see a similar scene play out toward the end!

The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
