Bad news, Pitch Perfect fans. It looks like the Treblemakers won’t be making an appearance in Pitch Perfect 3.

The highly anticipated third installment of the musical comedy franchise is still in the midst of rounding out its cast, but one familiar face you won’t be seeing is that of Skylar Astin.

The actor took to Twitter on Thursday (Dec. 15) to let fans in on the fact that Beca’s boyfriend Jesse won’t be returning.

“Yes. As of now, the Trebles and I won’t be in the third Pitch Perfect movie,” tweeted Astin. “They seem to be taking the story in a different direction.”

As sad as we are to hear that the Trebles won’t be returning, the decision to leave them out of the third movie makes sense given the “different direction” Astin alluded to in his tweet.

Back in November, we learned from Pitch Perfect star Anna Camp that the writers were interested in exploring the idea of making “the girls adults living in the world.”

Perhaps one way to transition the Bellas into adulthood is by severing the ties they have to Barden University. One of the obvious ties is of course the Bellas’ male counterpart, so it’s possible that leaving the Trebles out of the threequel could allow for all of our favorite girls to grow more into themselves.

Either way, we’ll definitely be interested to see where the third installment of the series finds them!

Pitch Perfect 3 is set to hit theaters on Dec. 22, 2017.
