The latest take on Ghostbusters may have had a lukewarm welcome at the box office, but that doesn’t necessarily spell the end for the franchise as a whole.
In fact, Ghostbusters creator Ivan Reitman recently revealed during an interview with the Mr. Wavvy Podcast that the world can expect more Ghostbusters to hit the big screen somewhere down the line.
“There’s going to be many other Ghostbusters movies,” said Reitman, according to ComicBook.com. “They’re just in development right now.”
Unfortunately for fans of the latest installment of the Ghostbusters franchise, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll get to see Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones suit up for an action packed-sequel.
Despite director Paul Feig’s interest in coming back for a sequel, the box office numbers don’t seem to be in his favor.
Even so, for fans of the Ghostbusters universe, Reitman’s comments pose a bit of a silver lining.
As Yahoo Movies points out, there’s been talk of a male-led Ghostbusters reboot featuring Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt in the past. There’s also the potential for the franchise to expand beyond the Ghostbusters story we already know, but whether or not the studio decides to go that route remains to be seen.
Regardless, we’ll be interested to see what the future of the Ghostbusters franchise holds, and crossing our fingers that Feig, Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon, and Jones get the chance to take a crack at a sequel.
