Another NBC musical is in the works, and this time its leading lady is going to be Jennifer Lopez!
The “Ain’t Your Mama” singer has signed on for NBC’s holiday 2017 live musical Bye Bye Birdie and we are totally ready to see Jenny from the block hit the musical stage.
NBC made the Bye Bye Birdie announcement late last month, though the musical isn’t slated until the end of 2017.
“She came to us and said, ‘I love this movie and I’d love to do it,'” NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said during a Paley Center panel via The Hollywood Reporter.
Lopez is clearly excited about her upcoming role as Rosie as she is also set to be one of the live musical’s executive producers.
“Broadway musicals and films fueled my childhood and Bye Bye Birdie was one of my favorites,” Lopez said in a statement. “I’m proud to be a part of the NBC family with Shades of Blue and I thought it would be a blast to take on one of their big live musicals.”
Bye Bye Birdie Live will be based on the 1960 Broadway musical version which originally starred Dick Van Dyke as Albery Peterson and Chita Rivera as Rosie. The musical is famously known for its rock ‘n’ roll music and Elvis Presley vibes, so bringing to TV is going to be amazing.
While you’ll have to wait until next year to see Lopez hit the TV musical stage, NBC has a couple of other live musicals coming to your TV screens a little sooner that you can distract yourself with.
Hairspray starring Jennifer Hudson and Kristin Chenoweth airs December 7, 2016, while A Few Good Men is coming to NBC sometime in the spring.
