When it comes to wand wielding, it takes a bit of practice to get those swishes and flicks exactly right— just ask Eddie Redmayne!

During an appearance at EW’s PopFest in Los Angeles on Sunday (Oct. 30), Redmayne opened up about what it was like to go into wand training for the first time on the set of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

It turns out, wand rehearsals are much tricker than they seem, and in Redmayne’s case, the actor says that if he could go back in time and give himself one piece of advice, it would be to simply relax.

“I hadn’t realized it, but subconsciously, it’d been like, 33 years of drumroll to that moment— and so the nerves were pretty high when I picked up that wand,” recalled Redmayne.

So how did Redmayne master Newt Scamander’s ability to use a wand with such ease? It turns out that Redmayne actually took cues from Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.

“The other thing I would tell myself is do what I then did later after my catastrophic first day, which was go and watch what Dan and Rupert and Emma did, and steal their best bits,” confessed the actor.

It definitely sounds like Eddie Redmayne learned from the best when it came to perfecting his skills with a wand!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in theaters on November 18.
