Eddie Redmayne is set to play the lovable Newt Scamander in J.K. Rowling’s upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them but it turns out the actor almost played a wizard of a different sort.

According to Metro UK, Redmayne once auditioned for the role of You Know Who himself, back when he was a power hungry Slytherin known as Tom Riddle.

“I actually auditioned to play Tom Riddle while I was at university,” said Redmayne in an interview with Empire as reported by Metro UK. “I properly failed and didn’t get a call back.”

Redmayne may have botched his shot at playing Lord Voldemort, but that didn’t stop the Brit from secretly hoping he’d eventually get cast in the films, just like his fellow friends Domnhall Gleeson (who played Bill Weasley) and Rob Pattinson (who played Cedric Diggory).

“Over the years, I always hoped I might be cast as a member of the Weasley family,” continued Redmayne. “But unfortunately, not.”

It sounds as though fate had other plans in store for Redmayne and lucky for him, he’ll finally get his chance to show off his wand-wielding skills when Fantastic Beasts hits theaters!
