When The Vampire Diaries returns for its final season tonight, fans will come face to face with a version of Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) they haven’t seen in quite some time.

Showrunner Julie Plec opened up about what viewers can expect from this year’s season premiere in a short video posted to the official Vampire Diaries Twitter account.

In her rundown, Plec reminded us all that the last time we saw both Damon and Enzo (Michael Malarkey), they had found themselves at the mercy of the creature they stumbled upon after opening a mysterious vault. The effects of the creature have caused both vampires to revert and Damon’s new personality in particular, will undoubtedly strike a chord of deja vu among longtime fans of the series.

“This is the Damon Salvatore we thought we’d never see again. The Damon Salvatore who, pre-Elena, had not a care in the world. Didn’t care who he hurt, and how bad he was,” explained Plec. “This time, it’s being caused by someone else and Damon has lost control of Damon.”

This definitely explains all of those teasers we’ve been getting recently of Damon being up to his old tricks again.

More importantly, it’s got us wondering how, or even if, Damon will be able to fight off the creature that has caused him to revert back to his selfish ways.

It definitely sounds like we’re in for quite the ride this year when it comes to The Vampire Diaries, and we can’t wait to see how Julie Plec ties everything up when we finally get to the finale!

The final season of The Vampire Diaries airs tonight (Friday, Oct. 21) at 8 p.m. on The CW.
