The first trailer for Will Smith’s Collateral Beauty is finally here and it’s bound to tug at your heartstrings.

Smith plays a New York advertising executive named Howard who’s just looking for some answers in the upcoming drama written and directed by David Frankel. Despite Howard’s successful career, he struggles to come to terms with how to go on living his life after a tragic accident takes his family away from him.

“Howard is a brilliant, creative, charismatic guy,” says Kate Winslet’s Claire at one point during the trailer. “He used to love life. Right now, he hates it.”

In an effort to grapple with his depression, Howard begins writing letters not to people, but to things: Love, Time, and Death.

The three things Howard believes “connect every single human being on earth.”

Howard probably never expects to get a response, but in a surprising twist, the universe answers by sending Love, Time and Death to personally respond to each of Howard’s letters.

From there, the trailer teases what happens when Howard comes face to face with the things he’s been searching for answers to, and the result is bound to be one emotional journey.

Smith and Winslet aside, the upcoming drama boasts a seriously impressive cast including Edward Norton, Michael Pena, and Naomie Harris. Kiera Knightley, Jacob Latimore, and Helen Mirren play Love, Time and Death, respectively.

If the trailer is anything to go by, we definitely think this is one film you should plan on bringing tissues to!

Collateral Beauty premieres in theaters on December 16.
