The 2016 VMAs may have been full of some seriously amazing moments, but one thing that was missing was our favorite 1989 singer, Taylor Swift.

Swift was notably absent from this year’s festivities and her lack of presence at MTV’s annual award show didn’t go unnoticed by music fans everywhere. After all, award shows just don’t feel the same without Swift and a few of her pals living it up and jamming to everyone’s stellar performances on stage!

Despite how much fun it is to spot Swift having a blast in the crowd, the “Bad Blood” singer had a pretty good reason for opting out of the VMAs this year. It turns out, she was busy fulfilling her civic duty by reporting to jury duty.

A few lucky Swifties who also had jury duty on Sunday (Aug. 28) ran into Swift at the civic center in Nashville and were able to snag pics with the singer.

“Met @taylorswift13 today at jury duty. She is so nice. #civicduty,” wrote Twitter user @n8foo.

Twitter user @annaclare15 also took to the social media platform to share a seriously envy-worthy pic of her dad posing with TayTay.

“When your dad has jury duty with taylor swift…,” wrote the fan.

Meanwhile, Hayley Mason shared a fun behind-the-scenes photo of what the vibe is like the courtroom when someone like Swift shows up to perform their civic duty.

“What happens when Taylor Swift reports for jury duty: several men in suits & ear pieces guard the halls, courtroom,” wrote Mason.

Finally, the fan account Taylor Swift Updates posted a fun video of the singer chatting with fellow prospective jurors.

Given her very important previous engagement, we really can’t blame Swift for choosing to skip the 2016 VMAs!
