‘Arrow’ EP Confirms Season 5 Will Close Out A Chapter

Arrow is going back to its roots for the show’s upcoming fifth season.

The CW’s superhero stalwart introduced a bit more magic and supernatural mystery during its fourth season, thanks in large part to Oliver’s main antagonist, the diabolical Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough). Fans who missed the gritty realism of earlier seasons will be happy to hear that the show’s newfound love of the supernatural won’t continue in Season 5.

Executive producer Wendy Mericle recently told IGN that the forthcoming season will be an answer to Season 1 as Season 5 will focus on “closing this chapter out.”

“The show was always meant to be a gritty crime drama at its heart,” Mericle said. “And then Flash came along, and oh my gosh, we have meta powers. And then Damien was, well, we haven’t done magic on the show, let’s try to do that. I think for Season 5, just because it is an answer to Season 1, and we are sort of closing this chapter out, we did want to go back to our roots and figure out what is specific to this show. What is our universe? Go back to, ‘What is Arrow?'”

Mericle’s comments echo a statement made by Stephen Amell last July at the Heroes & Villains Fan Fest.

The fifth season of Arrow premieres Wednesday, October 5 on The CW.
