A new drama series inspired by Martin Scorsese’s 2006 Oscar-winning film The Departed is in development at Amazon.

Set in present day Chicago, the television reboot will revolve around a young cop who goes undercover to infiltrate a ruthless Latino gang while at the same time battling the gang’s own plant in the police department. Amidst the warring factions, the series will follow the two embattled moles as they attempt to fulfill their mission and stay alive.

Penned by Jason Richman (Lucky 7, Detroit 1-8-7), Deadline reports that the series will put an updated spin on the two-way-undercover concept made famous by Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio in the original film while also being inspired by the 2002 Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs.

The Departed, which earned five Academy Award nominations and won for Best Picture and Best Director, featured an all-star cast that included Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga, Anthony Anderson, and Alec Baldwin. No word yet on which — if any — of the cast will return for the show, but we wouldn’t be surprised if new faces replace DiCaprio and Damon, among others.

The Departed isn’t the only film to be adapted into a television series at Amazon. Last week it was announced that Amazon ordered ten episodes of a new show based on Tom Clancy’s popular Jack Ryan character starring The Office’s John Krasinski.

No details on a possible premiere date for the television adaptation of The Departed have been announced.
