Amy Adams is the only one who can uncover the secret to our survival and save the world from global warfare in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Arrival.

Based on author Ted Chiang’s short story “Story of Your Life,” the first full length trailer for Arrival seems like a bit of a more cerebral Independence Day mixed with a more dramatic Armageddon. The film revolves around mankind’s quest to communicate with a collection of mysterious alien spacecrafts that appear across the world. Led by expert linguist Dr. Louise Banks (Amy Adams), an elite team is put together which includes Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker to investigate.

As the world comes perilously close to global war, Banks and company race against the clock for answers – and to find them, Banks will take a chance that could threaten humanity.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Sicario), the trailer shows Adams’ game attempt to communicate with the visitors from another planet by writing the word “human” on a whiteboard. While Adams makes progress, their intentions remain a mystery.

“We need to make sure that they understand the difference between a weapon and a tool. Language is messy and sometimes one can be both.”

Arrival is scheduled to be released on November 11, 2016.
