Ashley Tisdale may best be known for High School Musical, but she’s really hoping audiences will soon start taking her seriously as a multifaceted actress.

In a recent interview with Yahoo to promote her new comedy, Amateur Night, Tisdale opened up about the challenges she’s faced after portraying the high-strung Sharpay Evans in the hit Disney Channel original movie.

While Tisdale says she’s “completely grateful” for the love she continues to receive because of High School Musical, the actress also stressed that it does mean people tend to pigeonhole her as an actress.

“I’ve been acting since I was 3 years old. I had a career before Disney, so I want a career after Disney,” explained Tisdale in regards to the challenge that comes with landing new roles. “I know it’s definitely something where you kind of have to go in and prove yourself— it’s never been easy.”

Working hard to prove herself is always a challenge, but it’s an uphill battle Tisdale is all too familiar with. The actress also revealed that she’s always found herself fighting for the parts she’s desperately wanted to play— even when auditioning for roles like Maddie in the Disney Channel’s Suite Life of Zack and Cody.

“I’ve always kind of had obstacles but…I’m just very driven. I’m someone that I’m going to prove it to you that I was meant to do this,” explained Tisdale. “I go in there, and I fight for the role, and I think it makes me way more grateful for the experience after.”

We’ve always loved Ashely Tisdale, but we’ve definitely got a lot more respect for the actress after hearing her talk about how hard she works to land the roles she really wants!
