“I can’t say because I don’t know, but I would imagine this is probably the end of this franchise for me,” Stewart told ITV.
Stewart first took on the role nearly two decades ago in 2001, so naturally, his departure from the series would be bittersweet. That being said, he did leave fans with a bit of a silver lining.
“The thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it’s the end, it’s over,” said Stewart regarding the genre’s uncanny penchant for figuring out how to bring characters back.
In fact, Stewart went on to remind fans that though his rendition of Charles Xavier was vaporized by Jean Gray, he’ll still be making an appearance in the new Wolverine sequel. The actor also teased that when he does return, fans should expect to see a “very different” Charles Xavier who is “nothing like you’ve ever seen in the past.”
Fans will get to experience the “very different” Professor when the upcoming untitled Wolverine sequel finally hits theaters in 2017. Details surrounding the plot of the film are being kept firmly under wraps, so we’re really looking forward to getting some more clues as to the general plot when the teaser trailer for the film eventually makes its way onto the internet!
The Wolverine sequel premieres March 3, 2017.
