As the cast of The Vampire Diaries gears up for the series’ final season, the question on everyone’s minds is whether or not Nina Dobrev will return as Elena to wrap things up for her character.

Though the actress left the series in 2015, executive producer Julie Plec has made it clear that she’s always envisioned the The Vampire Diaries inevitable end to include Elena. It’s a sentiment that Plec remained firm on in a new interview with TV Line at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

“A promise was made— an emotional promise— that I would love to see come to life,” Plec told TV Line‘s Andy Swift when asked about whether or not Dobrev would return to wrap up the series. “There’s been friendship promises made, and now we’ll see if we can deliver on them.”

Based on Plec’s comments, it sounds like the ball is very much in Dobrev’s court at this point.

On the subject of familiar faces, the showrunner also teased that Elena may not be the only character who’s got a great chance of coming back before the series wraps up for good.

“I would not be me if we were not visiting some old faces,” explained Plec. “This is a year to celebrate what the series has been and what it’s felt like to be together and to love these characters, and so…whether it’s through memory, or flashback, or some other surprise, we’ll find ways to say hello and goodbye to those people again.”

We’re all about seeing old characters again — in fact, we’ve even got a list of Vampire Diaries alums who we’d like to see make an appearance in the final season. Check it out here!
