‘The Vampire Diaries’ Is Officially Ending After Season 8

It’s officially the end.

After months of speculation, The Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec announced today at San Diego Comic Con that the series’ upcoming season will be its last.

“It’s so rare for a show to get to last this long, and what a privilege that Mark Pedowitz and Peter Roth have allowed us to choose the time to end the journey on our own creative terms,” said Plec in a press release. “It’s been eight of the best years of my life. I will miss it terribly, but I’m so proud to be here to see it to its proper end.”

The news shouldn’t come as a huge shock to fans of the long-running supernatural drama, especially since a number of cast members had already made it known they wouldn’t be staying on past season 8.

Following Nina Dobrev’s departure from the series in 2015, stars Ian Somerhalder, who played Damon Salvatore, and Kat Graham, who portrayed Bonnie Bennett, announced earlier this spring that they both intended to do only one more season.

Showrunners long maintained that The Vampire Diaries was about the relationship between brothers Damon and Stefan (Paul Wesley), so Somerhalder’s announcement in particular tipped many fans off to the fact that the series probably wouldn’t continue without him. At the time of his announcement however, The CW said they hadn’t yet made a decision about the fate of the series.

Though Plec didn’t confirm Dobrev’s return during the Comic-Con panel, she has previously said the actress would return to reprise her role as Elena for a series finale. One original TVD member whose return Plec was able to confirm however, is series creator Kevin Williamson, who is coming back to write the final season.
