Liam Neeson is a monstrous tree with a very particular set of skills in the visually spectacular new trailer for A Monster Calls.
Based on Patrick Ness’ 2011 novel of the same name, filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona’s (Jurassic World 2) fantasy drama centers on Conor, a 12-year-old boy (Lewis MacDougall), who escapes into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales in an attempt to deal with both his mother’s (Felicity Jones) terminal illness and constant bullying at school. Conor’s new world, which explores courage, loss, and faith, features Liam Neeson’s monster, an immensely opposing tree who helps him cope with the harsh realities of life.
Chock-full of whimsy and cinematic intrigue, the vibrant trailer effortlessly combines real world issues like Conor’s difficulties with family and school with fantastical elements like, well, giant trees plucking you out of bed in the middle of the night to wreak havoc.
“I know everything about you. The truth that you hide. The truth you dream.”
Academy Award-nominee Sigourney Weaver also stars as Conor’s grandmother, who doesn’t exactly appear to be a beacon of support for her grandchild in his time of need. Perhaps she too needs a giant tree monster to teach her about the importance of empathy.
A Monster Calls is scheduled to be released on October 21, 2016.
