Twins Dylan and Cole Sprouse have been in the spotlight most of their lives, but there’s still plenty fans don’t know about them!
As the Disney Channel’s resident on-screen troublemakers, the duo rose to fame with a three year stint on the hit show, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. The brothers followed up their time at the Tipton by reprising their roles as the Martin twins in the spinoff, Suite Life on Deck for another three years until 2011.
Since then, Dylan and Cole — who started acting when they were only eight months old – have gone on to pursue college educations and surprising new ventures.
Check out these fun facts we dug up about the Sprouse twins below!
1. They played Adam Sandler’s adopted son in Big Daddy.
Before they were The Disney Channel’s Zack and Cody, the Sprouse brothers starred opposite Adam Sandler in 1999’s Big Daddy, where they split the role of Julian McGrath.
Though they were quite young at the time, it’s clear they still have fond memories of working with Sandler.
“He’s such a funny guy,” recalled Cole in an interview with People back in 2009. “He could make you laugh if you were 2 or 80.”
2. Dylan worked as a host at a restaurant.
During his time at NYU, the actor even took a job hosting at a restaurant in New York City. Once the media caught wind of Dylan’s latest venture, many began speculating that perhaps the young star was down on his luck. Sprouse, however, immediately took to his Tumblr to shed some light on his decision to take a job outside of the realm of acting.
“I took this as a way to try a new experience, working somewhat below the means I’m used to, as well as a way to socialize and get out of the house,” wrote Sprouse. “I feel most comfortable when I’m working and doing something…I will potentially return to acting someday, but in no way do I think any experience is sa step down for me, but rather a new step in another direction.”
3. Cole says taking a break from acting was pivotal to his return to the craft.
Dylan and Cole Sprouse spent the majority of their childhood acting, so it probably came as a bit of a surprise to some when both brothers decided to leave the business in order to pursue college. This fall, Cole is set to make his grand return to television, something the actor told EW wouldn’t have happened if he had never stepped away from the profession.
“I needed to take a break and step out of myself…I needed a dose of reality and I needed to see myself in a more objective point of view,” explained Sprouse. “And now I think I can enjoy [acting], which is a really fundamental part about being an actor.
4. Both brothers were involved in extra curricular activities while at NYU.
Dylan even tried his hand at student leadership. In 2011, Sprouse was elected president of his residence hall, Third Avenue North. Shortly after his win, Sprouse discussed his plans as president with NYU’s student newspaper, Washington Square News, citing a desire to fix some broken entryways on the side of the building as his first order of business. Additionally, Sprouse also opened up about why he decided to run for president.
“I want to make many positive and progressive reforms to some of the building designs of Third North and South,” Sprouse told WSN. “I want to properly represent the people there and the ever-changing ideas of freshman in general. It’s a great role to have, especially if it’s something you want to do in the future.”
5. Cole strongly recommends all child stars take a break from acting like he and his brother did.
The Sprouse siblings were at the height of their career when they decided to take a break from acting to pursue their college degrees at NYU, but it’s a decision both twins stand by. In fact, Cole thinks that a break from acting is absolutely vital for child stars because it allows them to see themselves in a new light and to develop in ways they wouldn’t be able to on set.
“It allows them to get real life experiences, real life stories, and as an artist, that’s what you pull off of for emotional depth, for emotional range, for all of that,” Sprouse explained to E! News. “If you have no stories to tell and led no life in any realistic sense, then you can’t go anywhere.”
6. Dylan is in no rush to sign on to a new project.
Cole Sprouse may be gearing up to star in the CW’s Riverdale, but his brother Dylan is currently in no hurry to sign on to a new project. According to MTV, Sprouse took to his Instagram recently to explain that he’s looking for the right role.
“The project that I do next needs to be good or the character needs to be something different from what I’ve done before, so for now I’m just auditioning until that kind of thing comes along,” wrote Dylan in the post which has since been deleted.
