We’re going straight to (the mind of the star of) the Wild Wild West!

Will Smith is often referred to as the King of Fourth of July Movies. The actor has historically dominated the box office during the summer holiday weekend with big budget action films like Independence Day, Men in Black, Hancock, and Men in Black 2 all opening at number one.

Despite the star’s overwhelming success, Smith recently opened up about one of his biggest movie regrets and it just so happens to involve yet another one of his films that opened at number one: The Wild Wild West.

“I had so much success that I started to taste global blood and my focus shifted from my artistry to winning,” Smith revealed at Cannes Lion, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I wanted to win and be the biggest movie star, and what happened was there was a lag — around Wild Wild West time — I found myself promoting something because I wanted to win versus promoting something because I believed in it.”

Added Smith: “I consider myself a marketer. My career has been strictly being able to sell my products globally, and it’s now in the hand of fans. I have to be in tune with their needs and not trick them into going to see Wild Wild West.”

After Smith’s turn as Capt. James West in the critically reviled film, the actor went on to star in dramas like The Legend of Bagger Vance and Ali before returning to the blockbuster scene, starring in sequels to earlier hits Men in Black and Bad Boys.

While Smith has become a bit more selective over the years, he still has a few blockbuster films up his sleeve. You can catch the King’s upcoming film, the hotly anticipated Suicide Squad, on August 5.
