Daniel Radcliffe is used to the mystical world of magic and wizardry, so you might think his addition to the Now You See Me franchise would include the former Boy Who Lived having the chance to once again brandish his supernatural abilities.
But you’d be wrong.
“For someone like Daniel, it’s really fun to go against your image,” Che told MTV News. “He’s such a goodie-two-shoes in Harry Potter. I just wanted him to throw off the gloves and be weird and quirky.”
While it’s not difficult to imagine Radcliffe pulling off “weird and quirky,” fans who will always see the actor as Harry Potter are in for a surprise as Radcliffe’s character is also — pause for dramatic effect — hilariously inept when it comes to magic.
“He’s actually really good at magic in real life,” the director continued. “We didn’t know which way we were going to go with this character at first. Was he going to be good at magic and deny it? Or was he going to be bad at magic and pervert the idea of magic? So we were shooting his opening scene, where he was throwing the cards back and forth, and he was catching the card every time. He was really good! And then one of the last takes I asked him to miss the catch and be really bad — and the whole crew cracked up.”
Harry Potter bad at magic? Now we’ve truly seen everything.
Also featuring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Lizzy Caplan, and Morgan Freeman, Now You See Me 2 is now playing.
