Superman better watch his back! Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is gearing up to bring the original superhero to the big screen.
The Fast & Furious star took to Instagram on Sunday (May 30) to announce that he has officially signed on to play Doc Savage, aka “the world’s first superhero (pre-dating Superman),” in an upcoming movie.
“Comic book fans around the world know that the cool thing about “Doc” Savage is that he’s the inspiration for Superman. First name Clark, called “Man of Bronze”, retreats to his “Fortress of Solitude” in the Arctic etc etc.,” wrote Johnson. “Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension.”
Though Doc may have incredible mental and physical skills, Johnson went on to say that the main reason he’s so excited about playing the character is because he’s a “hilarious weirdo.”
“Confidently, yet innocently he has zero social graces whatsoever due to his upbringing so every interaction he has with someone is direct, odd, often uncomfortable and amazingly hilarious,” wrote Johnson.
The former WWE star has an impressive slate of projects in the works, including a Jumanji remake, Fast 8, and The Big Trouble In Little China reboot (to name just a few). He’s also playing the DC Universe hero, Black Adam, in Shazam. Still, it’s clear Johnson is taking plenty of time to prep for his part as Doc Savage.
The action star said he spoke “for hours” with Superman creator Shane Black and that it helped him understand why the “weirdo” aspects of Doc Savage were left on the cutting room floor when it came to creating the Man of Steel.
“But to us, it’s that ‘weirdo’ part that makes Clark “Doc” Savage dope!,” said Johnson. “Can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one of a kind character.”
We can’t wait!
