This week’s shocking twist regarding one character’s backstory on Game of Thrones may have stunned fans everywhere, but apparently it’s information the showunners have been sitting on for a while.
In a brand-new interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss revealed that Hodor’s tragic backstory is one of three huge twists that author George R.R. Martin entrusted them with two years ago when he laid out a rough plan as to how he planned to end his unfinished book series.
In fact, Hodor’s story is one that Martin had dreamed up from the very moment he first introduced the lovable giant in the first book of his A Song of Ice and Fire series.
The shocking twist behind Hodor’s name (which isn’t even really a name, but a mashup of the phrase “hold the door”) is one of three huge plot points Martin revealed to both Benioff and Weiss. It’s also one of two that we’ve already seen play out in HBO’s television series. Fans got to see the first of Martin’s bigger twists last season when Stannis Baratheon sacrificed his daughter Shireen in an unforgettable scene which found the young girl being burned at the stake.
So what’s the third huge revelation that Martin entrusted Benioff and Weiss with?
“[It’s] from the very end,” Benioff told EW.
We can’t even begin to imagine what that last scene could entail, but if it’s anything like the first two twists that have already been carried out, we’re sure it’ll throw us for a huge loop!
Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO
