The Blacklist threw fans for a loop when it brought back a major character during Thursday (May 19) night’s season finale.
Last month, fans mourned the loss of Liz (Megan Boone), who we all thought had died just after giving birth to her daughter. It turns out, however, that Liz’s fate wasn’t necessarily set in stone. During the season finale on Thursday night, the series made a shocking revelation: Liz is actually alive and well. Just before the episode ends, we see Liz reunite in Cuba with her husband Tom (Ryan Eggold) and their daughter.
So how did Liz survive? Per Deadline’s recap, her death was faked as a means of protecting her. Fans had been speculating that perhaps it had been Red (James Spader) who had set the whole thing up, but it was actually Kate (Susan Blommaert) who did the planning right under everyone’s noses.
During the episode, Kate explains to Red that she had help from a doctor who put Liz into a medically induced coma. It was convincing enough that even Red didn’t think to question Liz’s fate. Kate also revealed that Liz faked her death for the sake of her daughter.
“A child was paying the price for Liz’s association with you,” Kate told Red. “She loved her daughter that much.”
But despite the length both Kate and Liz went to ensure her safety and the baby’s, it turns out it was all for not. In the midst of Liz and Tom’s happy family reunion, the family was interrupted when they realized Alexander Kirk’s people had tracked them all the way to Cuba.
But of course, The Blacklist couldn’t leave us without introducing yet another plot twist that shocked viewers far and wide. In the final moments of the episode, we see Liz tied to a chair. Just before the end, Kirk saunters in and reveals that he’s actually her father.
Talk about one huge cliffhanger! We’ll definitely be waiting with bated breath to find out how Liz handles this new bit of information come season four!
