Nina Dobrev may have said farewell to The Vampire Diaries last year, but fans got the surprise of a lifetime when the actress’ voice made an appearance during Friday’s (May 13) big season finale. Now, showrunner Julie Plec is opening up about when fans can expect to see the actress next.

In an interview with TV Line, Plec explained that Dobrev chose to record new audio for the moment in which Elena’s voice lures Damon (Ian Somerhalder) toward the vault. Though the moment was wholly unexpected, it’s not the first time this season that fans have gotten a glimpse of Elena since Dobrev’s big exit from the series last year. Earlier this season, fans caught a peek at the character when Damon thought he’d accidentally burned her body — though that moment was actually created using old recycled footage. As for when Elena might pop up again next? Plec doubled down on her plans to bring Dobrev back at the very end of the series.

“It’s what she and I kind of agreed on when she decided to move on, and it’s what I’ve got in my head,” Plec told TVLine’s Andy Swift. “Obviously things can change throughout time, if the show goes on longer than we expect it to, or if we all collectively decide it would be fun to bring her back earlier, and she wanted to. But in my opinion, she was very clear about what she wanted the next step in her life to be, and she’s doing a great job of achieving that. So I’m sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end.”
