It was announced back in April that actress Stana Katic would not be returning for the (pending) new season of ABC’s CastleAs a co-lead in the dramedy, the departure of Katic’s Kate Beckett means big changes to the overall plotline. But as the season finale draws near, many viewers are wondering just how Beckett will take her final bow. In a crime-laced comedy, murder is always a-foot. This time, it might just be Beckett’s.

ABC released promo for the May 16 season finale on Monday (May 9), and it seems to hint that Beckett will meet her death at the hands of the show’s long-running, mysterious bad guy LokSat. (Adding fuel to the speculation, the episode is worrisomely titled “Crossfire.”)

“Everything ends in tragedy, even an epic love story like yours,” the villain warns in the teaser.

“There is death in every episode of Castle,” executive producer Alexi Hawley pointed out in an interview with Entertainment Weekly when discussing the finale. “Their lives are in jeopardy pretty much from [the] jump.  What we wanted to do was keep pulling the rug out from under them. Things get dangerous very fast. Ultimately, it’s a back-and-forth between being the hunted and being the hunters all the way through the finale.”

Meanwhile, the fate of the show overall is still up in the air. Though it was reported last week that Castle‘s lead, Nathan Fillion, has officially signed on for new season, we still don’t know if season 9 will make it to the air. ABC was scheduled to make a decision on the show’s renewal on Friday but extended the deadline to sometime this week.

The season 8 finale of Castle airs Mondays, May 16 on ABC at 8/7c.
