Elementary fans said goodbye to a key character during Sunday night’s season 4 finale.

In the episode, Sherlock’s father, Morland Holmes, decided to leave New York City for London to deal with Moriarty’s organization. Morland’s departure serves as a bookend for actor John Noble’s stint as a series regular.

“This was always the plan that we would have John aboard for season 4,” executive producer Rob Doherty told TVLine’s Vlada Gelman. “We wanted Morland — and, by extension, John — to help us define season 4, and he absolutely did that.”

A strong supporting character since the show’s beginning in 2012, Morland Holmes first showed up when Sherlock (John Lee Miller) relapsed on his sobriety but stayed and found work, partly to keep an eye on his son, and partly, as Joan (Lucy Liu) suspects, to hide out from someone trying to assassinate him.

All hope is not lost for fans of the character, however. Doherty said the exit has been written so that there’s still a possibility for Morland to pop back into Sherlock and Joan’s life when he wants.

“We’ve also left the door very open to seeing John again next year,” explained Doherty.
