If Grey’s Anatomy fans have become accustomed to anything, it’s to expected the unexpected — even when it comes to relationships.

As season 11 of Shonda Rhimes’ pivotal medical melodrama wages on, fans have noticed that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Alex (Justin Chambers) have grown closer than ever in the wake of Derek’s death and Cristina’s sudden departure. Now, Pompeo is opening up about whether Meredith and Alex could ever be more than friends.

The actress explained the Meredith-Alex dynamic in great detail to TVLine’s Michael Ausiello in a recent interview.

“I think they’re too close… too much like brother and sister. I have super-close friends who I’m not romantically attracted to at all. So I think just because you’re so in love with someone in one way doesn’t mean it’s a romantic love. But they certainly do understand each other a lot,” she told TVLine.

While Pompeo’s comments may not sound very promising to fans rooting for Meredith and Alex to become more than friends, there’s no need to give up hope just yet.

In fact, in the off chance Rhimes decides a love affair would work between the two, Pompeo said she would trust the showrunner’s vision.

“This is Shonda’s show and whatever path she chooses to go down creatively, I’m with her,” she told TVLine. “I’m going to give it my all. I trust her vision. We’ve been a great team so far.”
