Castle just won’t be the same without Stana Katic. With the actress set to exit the series after eight seasons, fans everywhere are are gearing up to say goodbye to not only the series’ co-lead, but also the beloved pairing of Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Katic), aka Caskett.

In light of Kate Beckett’s upcoming farewell, we’ve uncovered an interview we did with Katic herself at People’s Choice Awards 2015. In it, the actress perfectly sums up just what makes her chemistry with Fillion so wonderful.

If you’ve loved Caskett’s effortless playful banter over the years, the actress says you’ve got the writers to thank for it.

“You know, Andrew Marlowe and his team love writing that kind of ThinMan-esque storyline, so I think that it all starts with the writing and after that, hopefully you’re able to bounce the ball back and forth with your partner,” Katic told People’s Choice in 2015. “Nathan and I manage to bounce that ball back and forth well, I think.”

It’s hard to imagine how Castle is going to fill the void now that we know Katic isn’t going to return. The good news is, series showrunners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley seem to have a plan in place as far as how they may proceed now that the show will inevitably go through a huge shake-up.

In an interview with TVLine earlier this month, Hawley explained that because they knew both Fillion and Katic had only renewed their contracts for one season, they were prepared for the possibility that ABC could renew Castle for a ninth season without one or both of it’s leading stars.

“Obviously our hope is that we come back ‘all hands on deck’ for season 9, but everybody needs to make deals,” Hawley explained. “There’s stuff up in the air, so we are trying to leave it in a dynamic way which leaves open the possibility that maybe the show won’t come back in the same form next season— although, again, we really hope that it does.”

Castle airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on ABC
