Music has lost another icon in the form of Prince. The legendary singer died Thursday (April 21) at his Paisley Park Estate in Chanhassen, Minn. at the age of 57.

“It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary iconic performer, Prince, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57,” his publicist Yvette Noel-Schure said in a statement reported by ABC News. “There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time.”

Though reps for the artist have not revealed how he died, TMZ, who was first to report on the “Purple Rain” artist’s passing, noted that Prince had been battling the flu for several weeks.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson on June 7, 1958, the singer-songwriter released his debut album, For You in 1978. Prince quickly became known for his unique sound: an effortless blend of pop, rock, and groovy synth funk beats. The singer constantly pushed the envelope with his provocative lyrics, sung in his signature falsetto.

An artist in every sense of the word, Prince sold over 100 million records world wide and won seven Grammys and an Oscar over the course of his career.

Prince leaves behind a lasting legacy and news of his passing struck a chord with millions across the world. Since news broke of his passing, many celebrities have taken to social media to mourn the loss of the iconic artist.
