It looks like Castle will have to do his super sleuthing without Detective Kate Beckett by his side come season 9. Deadline reports that actress Stana Katic will depart at the end of Castle’s current season.
According to the outlet, the decision to continue the series without Katic was made by ABC. News of a ninth season without Detective Beckett comes hot on the heels of yet another departure. The network announced just last week that actress Tamala Jones, who plays Lanie Parish, will also depart after season 8 wraps up.
While season 9 hasn’t officially been confirmed by ABC yet, the network did confirm that both Katic and Jones wouldn’t be a part of the series if it were to continue. (As of now, it sounds like co-lead Nathan Fillion will stay on if the series is renewed.) ABC released a statement to Deadline thanking both actresses for their contribution to the series.
“Kate Beckett has been a beloved character on our hit series Castle for the past 8 years. We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship,” ABC said. “Tamala Jones has also been an integral part of the series and we are grateful she was a part of Castle.”
Meanwhile, Katic made it a point to thank the network and fans while commenting about her exit.
“Rather then distract from what was an amazing experience, I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much beloved show. Thank you to the fans,” Katic told Deadline.
Katic and Jones’ departures will most likely mean a huge shake-up on the series, and showrunners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley seem prepared to bring back the show in a different format if it gets renewed.
“Obviously our hope is that we come back ‘all hands on deck’ for season 9, but everybody needs to make deals,” Hawley told TVLine prior to Katic’s exit. “There’s stuff up in the air, so we are trying to leave it in a very dynamic way which leaves open the possibility that maybe the show won’t come back in the same form next season — although, again, we really hope that it does.”
Castle airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on ABC
