Being the leader of the the free world is pretty tough. But sometimes, it pays to be presidential. You make decisions that effect the course of the world, you go down in history as the leader of the nation and if you’re President Obama, you get copies of the top-secret new season of HBO’s Game of Thrones before the rest of the rabid GoT fandom.
Yes, the rumors are true. Obama is such a huge Thrones fan that he’s reportedly requested — and will get — advance episodes of the new season before anyone else.
Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss let the cat out of the bag about Obama’s request during the season 6 red carpet premiere in Los Angeles. As reported by EW, during HBO’s Facebook live stream of the event, a reporter asked Weiss if there was an “ah-ha” moment ahead of season 6 when they realized they had achieved TV gold.
“I think, for both of us, finding out the President wanted advanced copies of the episodes was an ‘ah-ha’ moment,” Weiss said. “That was a very strange moment.”
And by “strange” we’re sure he means incredible! President Obama has been a vocal and avid fan of the the medieval melodrama for years. So, of course, they obliged.
“When the commander-in-chief says, ‘I want to see advanced episodes,’ what are you gonna do?” Benioff asked with a laugh.
In an unprecedented industry move, HBO decided not to send any screeners to journalists or insiders. This to maintain the secrecy of the show’s season 6 storylines, especially the fate of fan favorite Wall Watcher, Jon Snow. In other words, President Obama will know the secrets of Thrones before absolutely everyone else. You can add that to the number of secrets he probably occupies his mind with.
Last month, Thrones star Liam Cunningham, who plays Davos Seaworth, even joked that the POTUS gets special treatment over the cast.
“Did you know he gets advance copies? POTUS.” Cunningham told Vulture. “He gets DVD copies before we do. And we’re in it!”

For frantic fans who don’t have the presidential connect, Game of Thrones will return to HBO in all its glory on April 24.
