Is it time to say goodbye to Mystic Falls?

Yesterday (April 10), Ian Somerhalder surprised fans when he announced that season 8 of The Vampire Diaries would be his last as Damon Salvatore. While many have speculated that Somerhalder’s departure means the show is also ending, a rep for TVD told People’s Choice that no decision has been made about the fate of the vampire drama.

In other words, though TVD may be down a few cast members (in addition to Somerhalder, Kat Graham announced earlier this month that she’s also leaving the show next season), it could still continue with remaining (as of now) stars Paul Wesley and Candice Accola.

But should it?

On the one hand, showrunners have long maintained that The Vampire Diaries isn’t so much about the love triangle between Damon, Stefan, and Elena (Nina Dobrev, who exited the series in 2015), as it is about the relationship between the Salvatore brothers. To continue past season 8 with only one brother would go against that very basis. Graham even told People’s Choice prior to the series’ renewal last month that she thought it was the “right time” for TVD to end.

Then again, many series (Grey’s, Buffy, etc.) have managed to come out swinging after the departure of a lead character. The Vampire Diaries has already managed to move forward despite one major loss (Dobrev’s exit), there’s no reason why it couldn’t reinvent itself yet again — perhaps, this time, with some new characters in tow. Not to mention, Wesley, Accola, and other cast members, including Matt Davis, can certainly hold their own.

But what do you think? Should TVD continue after Somerhalder leaves? Take the poll below to let us know where you stand on the future of The Vampire Diaries!

Let us know how you voted in the comments! The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays at 8/7c on The CW.
