And that’s a wrap on the 2014 Emmys!
From cable TV darlings to Netflix characters we’ve spent weekends in bed binge watching, this year’s show was basically the best crossover episode ever.
Breaking Bad cleaned the floor with its competition in its final season, earning four of the top nods; Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama. Meanwhile, the cast of Modern Family kept its winning streak alive, taking home the award for Outstanding Comedy Series for the fifth year in a row.
But enough with logistics. Whether our favorites were celebrated or snubbed, you have to admit, we were entertained in the process.
Here, in no particular order, are the seven funniest moments from the 66th Annual Emmys:
1. Seth Meyers’ Opening Monologue
Host Seth Meyers came out swinging in his opening monologue, cracking on the show being held on a Monday night and making light of category controversies.
“We had so many great shows this year. We had comedies that made you laugh and comedies that made you cry because they were dramas submitted as comedies,” Meyers joked.
2. Seth Meyers Introducing Amy Poehler as “Beyonce”
Meyers made all Bey Hive viewers stand at attention when he said, “Our first presenter asked to write her own introduction so please welcome my beautiful, amazing, and talented friend, Beyonce.”
And then, with perfect comedic timing, the camera panned to a different beloved blonde, Amy Poehler! In classic Queen Bey fashion, Meyers’ fellow SNL alum proceeded to work it on her way up the stage.
3. The #BillyOnTheStreet Segment
As a nice break up between winner announcements, Meyers and FUSE reporter Billy Eichner took to the streets of NYC to show how much New Yorkers know/care about the Emmys. Turns out—not that much. Catch the whole segment here.
4. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston’s Surprise Makeout Sesh
In one of the most GIF-inspiring moments of the night, Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston literally ambushed VEEP’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus with his mouth as she went up to accept her Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Cranston kissed Julia to remind her that he once guest-starred on Seinfeld. Let’s just say mission accomplished. Very accomplished.
5. ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s TV Theme Song Mash-Up
It was a smart of the Emmys to incorporate Weird Al considering he just topped the Billboard charts for the first time. And what his performance that much better? Featuring Andy Samberg as Game of Thrones’ infamous Joffrey Baratheon.
6. Jimmy Fallon Kanye’d Stephen Colbert
As a common theme of the night, SNL alums dominated the laughs throughout the show. And Jimmy Fallon Kanye’ing Stephen Colbert by accepting The Colbert Report’s Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series, right in front of Colbert, was no exception.
7. Jimmy Kimmel calling out Matthew Mcconaughey
The True Detective star got a lot of attention throughout the night (particularly from Modern Family director Gail Mancuso, who decided to focus on Mcconaughey throughout her entire acceptance speech), but no one ribbed the actor quite like Kimmel.
“You just won the Oscar like 5 months ago,” Kimmel said to Mcconaughey while presenting. “No offense, but how many of those speeches of yours are we supposed to sit through? I mean all right, all right, all right already.”
