The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards are in the book!
From Nicki Minaj’s opening performance of “Anaconda” to Beyonce picking up the “greatest living entertainer” award, the this year’s show was a jaw-dropping celebration of musical supremacy.
VMA stalwarts Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry didn’t leave the Forum in Inglewood, Ca. empty-handed — the artists captured Video of the Year and Best Female Video, respectively. Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran walked away with the Best Male Video award, and Ariana Grande took home the Best Pop Video award for “Problem.”
Whether you missed the show or just want to relive a few of the most memorable segments, here are 7 moments from the VMAs we can’t stop talking about!
1. Katy Perry and Riff Raff dress up like ’90s Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake on the red carpet.
Imitation is the sincerest form of… hilarity! Katy Perry and Riff Raff paid homage to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake by copying the matching denim outfits the pop stars wore to the 2001 American Music Awards.
2. Nicki Minaj flawlessly covers up a wardrobe malfunction.
Nicki Minaj was in desperate need of a safety pin during her spirited show opening performance with Ariana Grande and Jessie J. The “Anaconda” singer suffered a major wardrobe malfunction during a raucous rendition of “Bang Bang,” but boldly continued on with one hand on the mic and the other hand holding her dress together.
3. Taylor Swift wears a onesie!
Your time to shine is now, onesie! The comfortable jumpsuit isn’t just for babies and adult Halloween costumes anymore! Not only did singer-songwriter-fashionista Taylor Swift perform her new single “Shake it Off” for the first time, she also turned a few heads by donning a short one-piece covered in letters.
4. Taylor Swift continues her award show dancing dominance.
When Swift wasn’t dancing on the stage, she was rocking out in her seat next to Lorde, Demi Lovato, and Joe Jonas. As far as we could tell from the audience cam, the trio were chatting it up all night.
5. Sam Smith shuts it down with an amazing live performance!
Sam Smith made his MTV Video Music Award debut with a poignant performance of his emotional ballad “Stay With Me” that brought the audience (including Kim Kardashian and Kylie and Kendall Jenner) to their feet.
6. Miley Cyrus donates her MTV award to raise awareness for homelessness.
Miley Cyrus ceded her Video of the Year Award acceptance speech to a young Oregon man named Jesse in order to raise awareness for homelessness.
“I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving and lost and scared for their lives,” Jesse said during the acceptance speech. “I know, because I am one of those people.”
7. Beyonce accepts the MTV Video Vanguard Award from Jay Z and Blue Ivy.
The only thing that could top Beyonce’s amazing performance medley? Seeing Jay Z and Blue Ivy take the stage shortly thereafter to present her with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award. Sure, we’ve seen photos of the trio on Beyonce’s Instagram, but seeing them together on stage felt so much more intimate (and, not to mention, adorable). The family moment was especially fitting since Bey first announced her pregnancy at the 2011 VMAs. Full circle much?
