Movie sequels have a bad reputation. Sure, some sequels produce more eye-rolls than laughs, but not all sequels deserve our derision. Toy Story 2, Terminator 2, The Dark Knight, these are films that followed the successful sequel formula: build on the original content, heighten the action, and increase the drama to create a high quality supplement to the original.

Then again, there’s a reason movie sequels have a bad reputation.

While perusing Reddit we came across a list of lesser known movie sequels. We’re here to show you the good, the bad, and the direct-to-video in-between of nine sequels you probably didn’t know existed (according to Reddit users). Take a look!

1. Mean Girls 2

No Lindsay? No McAdams? No Fey? Not fetch.

2. Cruel Intentions 2

Described as a “comedy-drama direct-to-video prequel,” Cruel Intentions 2 is rewarded one point for casting a young Amy Adams in the Sarah Michelle Gellar role, but is deducted two points for not using the title Crueler Intentions.

3. The Skulls II

This direct-to-video sorta-sequel stars Robin Dunne, who also starred in Cruel Intentions 2 as well as our next film…

4. American Psycho II: All American Girl

Even the acting prowess of Mila Kunis can’t save a film that’s described as a “stand-alone 2002 direct-to-video sequel-spin-off.”

5. The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride

Fun fact: There’s also a Lion King 1 1/2 which, comparative to the other sequels on this list, is a critical darling boasting a robust 76% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

6. Titanic II

Looks like Celine Dion was right, the heart does in fact go on. The plot of this forgotten sequel per IMDB: “On the 100th anniversary of the original voyage, a modern luxury liner christened “Titanic 2,” follows the path of its namesake. But when a tsunami hurls an ice berg into the new ship’s path, the passengers and crew must fight to avoid a similar fate.”

7. Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd

Lacking the star power of its predecessor, this quasi prequel was actually a mild box office success despite its lackluster 10% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

8. The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea

If you’ve ever wondered what Ariel and Eric’s daughter might be like, The Little Mermaid II is for you! This direct-to-video sequel focuses on the happy couple’s daughter Melody and her quest to swim in the ocean despite her parents’ objections.

9. Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights

Technically this 2004 film isn’t so much a sequel as it is a “re-imagining” of the original, but the film does include a cameo from the original dirty dancer himself, Patrick Swayze.
