In the latest twist, star Alyson Hannigan recently told TVLine that a montage of the Mother’s funeral was left on the cutting room floor.
Hannigan, who portrayed Lilly Aldrin for 9 seasons on the hit CBS series, revealed that the original table read of the finale was 18 minutes longer than what eventually made it to air.
“Honestly, if you saw [that] cut, it would be even more heart-wrenching than what the finale was,” said Hannigan, who added that the missing scene may have helped the audience process the emotional final blow. “They were like, ‘No. It’s just too gut-wrenching.’ And I was like, ‘That’s what I want. I want my heart ripped out and slammed on the floor and, like, stomped on!’”
Hannigan — who explained that the missing scene may have helped the audience process the Mother’s death — also shared her theory about why some fans were disappointed by the finale. “Maybe it’s just me trying to make myself feel better about [the fans'] disappointment… but you know how if you’re in a relationship and you get dumped, you’d rather be mad at the person? I feel like maybe they’re just like, ‘Well, that’s all right. You sucked anyway,’ Hannigan explained. “They want to go out, like, angry, because it’s easier for them.”
We already know the alternate ending will be included on the Season 9 DVD and Complete Series box set, but the fate of the funeral scene that remained on the cutting room remains a mystery.
What do you think? Do you believe a Tracy Mosby funeral scene would have helped the finale?
