Lea Michele has shared many of the inspirations behind her upcoming album Louder (which is streaming on iTunes now), but up until now she’s kept mum about one particularly emotional track: “If You Say So.”

In a new interview with Seventeen, Michele reveals that the poignant lyrics in “If You Say So” actually originate from her last conversation with former Glee co-star and off-screen boyfriend Cory Monteith, who passed away last July.

“I have not talked about ‘If You Say So’ yet. It’s about my last conversation that I had with him,” Michele revealed. “I spoke to a woman who lost her son, and she mentioned how grateful she was that the last words she said to her son before he died were, ‘I love you.’ Mine were that as well. [The song] is just about that. There are lots of different emotions—if you could see this person again, what are the things you would want to say to them? It’s a personal story.”

The lyrics of “If You Say So” certainly echo Michele’s sentiments:

“Was just a week ago
You said I love you girl
I said I love you more
And a breath, a pause, you said, if you say so
If you say so
If you say so”
