The Harry Potter series may have come to a close seven years ago, but author J.K. Rowling just delivered a doozy of a rewrite.

In an upcoming interview with Wonderland magazine, Rowling reportedly says Hermione should have married Harry instead of Ron. A snippet of the interview, which was conducted by Wonderland guest-editor Emma Watson (who of course plays Hermoine in the Potter films), was published in Britain’s Sunday Times with the headline “JK Rowling Admits Hermione Should Have Wed Harry.”

“I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment,” Rowling reportedly says in the issue, which will be available this Thursday. “That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.”

The author acknowledges that her comments may upset many Potter fans.

“I know, I’m sorry,” she say, “I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”

Adding insult to the injury of Ron/Hermione shippers everywhere? Rowling says that the fictional pair probably would have needed “relationship counseling.”

Even Watson seems to be on board with the revelation.  “I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy,” Watson says in the piece.

Rowling’s comments of course sparked a debate amongst Potter fans. While some were thrilled to hear Rowling wanted Hermione to end up with Harry, others lamented the belated change of heart.

Okay, your turn: What do you think of Rowling’s comments? Do you agree that Hermoine should have ended up with Harry instead of Ron? Do you think Rowling was right to share her regrets with fans? Are you happy about the revelation or upset? Tell us in the comments!
