We’ve already teased some of the stars who will be appearing at this year’s People’s Choice Awards, now — with just a week or so to go before the main event — it’s time to start getting excited about what everyone is going to wear.
After all, the People’s Choice Awards holds the unique distinction of being the first award show of the new year. In other words, it’s the place for celebs to debut a new look or make a style statement that will be remembered well into 2014. Before we dive into a discussion about who will be crowned best dressed this year though (share your thoughts in the comments!), let’s look at what has worked and hasn’t in previous years.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the show, we sat down with fashion expert Tim Gunn to talk about the trends that we’ve seen pop up time and time again at the show. And trust us, we’ve seen it all. From little black dresses to metallic gowns and party attire, the People’s Choice Awards has played host to an array of dazzling looks.
“I love the red carpet at the People’s Choice Awards because it so diverse,” says Gunn. “You see so many different styles. It’s just such a broad range. It makes it — in my view — the most fun red carpet.”
One look that always stands out at the awards? Sequins.
“A sequin dress is a bit like a basic black dress,” explains Gunn. “They’re not going away.”
Case in point: Olivia Newton John wore sequins to the People’s Choice Awards in 1979, while Julianne Hough wore them to the show in 2013 (see photo above).
Gunn explains that sequins look great in strong lighting — which means they’re perfect for strutting down a red carpet or accepting an award on stage. That’s not to say sequins are necessarily easy to wear however. The sparkly trend can sometimes be tricky to pull off and in fact, if you want to look good in sequins there are a few things you should take note to avoid. Watch the video below to find out how to avoid a fashion disaster while wearing sequins.
We repeat, do not look like a crazy test pattern!
In addition to talking fashion trends, Tim Gunn promised to help me get ready for the People’s Choice Awards. Per his advice, I’ve been doing some major upkeep on my skin and teeth. I’ve also finally picked out a dress (sorry, no spoilers!) and settled on the right makeup. The only thing left to do? Figure out how to style my hair! Though I plan to wear my hair down, I’d like to give it a little extra oomph for show day. Watch the video below to find out how I’m adding some major volume to my locks:
I’ll be revealing my complete transformation (it’s a true before and after!) on show day. In the meantime, let’s get back to the discussion at hand. Which celeb do you think will look best this year? Who would you like to see debut a new style at the show? What trend will dominate the carpet? Ready, set, guess!
