Celebrated South African leader Nelson Mandela has passed away at the age of 95, CNN reports. Mandela, who helped lead the nation out of apartheid after being released from a 27-year prison sentence, wasn’t just revered by politicians and diplomats — he was celebrated in cinema too.

Countless films have been inspired by Mandela’s journey — with the latest, Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom, starring Idris Alba and Naomie Harris, opening over Thanksgiving weekend (see the trailer below).
